Overall Goals

In general, all the organisations participating in the project have a specific interest in activities of study, research, professional application or production concerning:

• digital conservation of sound documents
• defining procedures and protocols for transferring sound documents from analogical to digital supports
• identifying and improving restoration techniques for digitalised sound documents, in view of reconstructing musical works and pieces in their "original" version.

The project thus purposes to achieve the following objectives:

• favour the use of information technologies to preserve and valorise the sound and audiovisual heritage
• identify methodologies and tools capable of spreading the use of information and digital technologies in the cultural heritage sector, satisfying specific needs and supplying concretely practicable solutions
• promote the professional growth of sector practitioners, assisting them so that they can assume a central role in the processes of transition to the digital, arousing their awareness of the problem of the fragility of digital memories and, finally, providing them with the most appropriate knowledge and tools for their long-term preservation.

These objectives will be reached by means of specific activities, which have been subdivided among the participating organisations.  Expectations, in particular, are to:

• draw up cards to compile a census of sound archives
• collect information on the largest number of sound archives and insert them into a dedicated data bank that can be consulted on the Web
• perform an analysis of the data collected in order to evaluate trends and create a risk map
• reconnoitre all the material available as guidelines (IASA, DDS, European projects, etc.)
• define the structure of the guidelines that will be produced in the course of the collaboration the project defines
• define the elements of diversity between large and small archives
• elect study and "good practise" cases in the sector
• identify objectives and the detailed outline of the contents necessary to conduct training for the different typologies of use.
